Nathaniel Rich, Odds Against Tomorrow When Hurricane Sandy struck New York in October , Nathaniel Rich had to revise the proofs of his novel Odds Against Tomorrow. Rather, it has to do with how the novel frames this event as a crisis of rationality that puts into question the different ways in which people respond to risk.
Odds Against Tomorrow is a satire of the financial industry, an essay on the apocalyptic imagination, and a meditation about the dream of the simple life. On all of these thematic levels, it raises the question how life is affected by the attempt to anticipate, preempt, or confront the dangers that threaten it. The novel is divided into three parts. And our clients, as long as they pay for our services, are not liable either. The world of high finance is one in which disaster is deliberately courted as an opportunity for financial gain. Yet the more time he spends pondering the statistical odds of imagined catastrophes, the more crippling his anxieties become.
Elsa suffers from Brugada syndrome, a condition that makes her liable to suffer a heart attack at any moment. Nevertheless, she joins a hippie commune in rural Maine. This conclusion seems to be borne out by the second part of the novel. When Hurricane Tammy hits New York, it catches Mitchell and his employers at FutureWorld unprepared. We want to trust our impulses more. After he and Jane make it to a Red Cross camp in New Jersey, his first thought is for Elsa, whom he now begins to idolize as the embodiment of a radical alternative to his former way of life. The third part of the novel narrates their futile quest to locate Elsa, whose commune in Maine turns out to have collapsed after having been overrun by refugees.
Accepting vulnerability to risk as a necessary part of life, Mitchell feels himself reborn. On the way back he congratulated himself for not worrying about the toxins that must have tainted his little bath — mercury, PCB, dioxins, sewage. This would make for a tidy narrative arc: from the false securities and fake futures of the insurance business to the sustainability of subsistence farming, from the denial of death to the affirmation of life, with Elsa the prophetess and Mitchell her true disciple. Clearly, this is how Mitchell wishes to see himself. Yet it is not how the novel ends. She has also asked Jane to return a postcard Mitchell had written to her just before he started to work for FutureWorld. Rather than as diametrical opposites, Walden and Wall Street are revealed as distant points on a conceptual Moebius strip, with both revolving around promises of security and self-possession.
Whereas earlier she appeared to be perfectly insouciant, Jane is now consumed by anxiety and begins to fantasise about the wholly different way of life Mitchell has embraced. She felt that she wanted to live in the Flatlands rather desperately. Everything all right back there? Everything is not right, not at all. I am scared. In this respect, it also resonates with the general theory of immunity developed by the philosophers Roberto Esposito and Peter Sloterdijk, as well as with the notion of biopolitics Michel Foucault developed in his later writings on the subject.
